POSITION SUMMARY
Background:
The Civil Rights Institute of Inland Southern California (CRIISC) was developed through a decade of work in the community to build a facility and public programs to serve as a home for civil rights education and engagement. The mission of the CRIISC is to inspire people of all ages by lifting up the ongoing and historic civil rights stories of the region, fostering community advocacy, and building champions of tomorrow. Our vision is to connect people from all walks of life through stories, sharing of information, and personal relationships, to make Inland Southern California a center of civil rights, and social justice.
Constituted in 2011, incorporated in 2013, CRIISC opened its 3,000 square foot facility in 2022 as a partner in a multi-use project that includes 72 units of affordable housing and offices for the Riverside County Fair Housing Council. The facility includes: 1,500 square-foot exhibition space, media center, and community meeting space hosting up to 200 persons. The Civil Rights Institute of Inland Southern California was founded on partnerships. In a short time CRIISC has become a center for community learning and discussion, hosting 278 events, about 11,000 visitors and collaborations with 40 local, regional, and statewide organizations in its first year of operation. CRIISC welcomes visitors to the space free of charge to see each of the 3 exhibitions hosted per year alongside robust public programming, docent led tours, and community outreach.
Purpose:
The Civil Rights Institute of Inland Southern California is seeking a principal investigator who will lead the collection of research and material history on the history of LGBTQ+ activism, activity, and community building in Inland Southern California. From these research processes the Lead Researcher will work with the Public History Director to write and curate the exhibition, slated to open in June 2026.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Researcher selected as the Lead Researcher (hereafter referred to as “Lead Researcher” will be responsible for items included in this Scope of Work.
Scope of Work:
Period of Performance will be 8 months: December, 2024 – August 31, 2025
Specific Tasks:
I. Historical Research
A. Conduct Historical Research on LGBTQ+ Activism in Inland Southern California including from municipalities such as Ontario, San Bernardino, Palm Springs, Riverside, among others
B. Provide Historical Research Summaries consolidating research findings on particular topics and research areas
C. Conduct research at local archives, libraries, and online resources to gather relevant historical data
D. Compile a list of local repositories, materials and individuals to support current and future research.
II. Oral History Gathering
A. Utilize existing contacts to conduct oral history interviews with LGBTQ+ individuals about their experiences in the I.E.
B. Collaborate with the Public History Director on the transfer, ingest, transcription, and metadata creation of Oral History interviews
III. Material Culture Collection
A. Compile a Checklist list of material culture objects (ephemera, documents, images, objects) from local archives and libraries that could be utilized for the exhibition.
B. Work with the Public History Director and other CRIISC staff to plan an LGBTQ+ specific community collection day for post custodial digital archiving.
C. Utilize community contacts especially from those interviewed for the project to digitally collect materials such as ephemera, photos and documents for inclusion into the exhibition.
D. Collaborate with the Public History Director to scan, create metadata for and digitally preserve the collected materials in the CRIISC digital archive.
E. Work with the Public History Director to create a short list of possible objects to display on loan for the exhibition.
IV. Exhibition Curation
A. Create a draft checklist for the exhibition, work with the Public History Director to finesse checklist and loaned object list
B. Create Curation Outline for the exhibition
C. Work with the Public History Director to turn the Curation Outline into draft exhibition text (total of 10,000 – 15,000 words)
D. Work with the Public History Director to finalize the check list and exhibition text including copy editing and peer review.
V. Community Building
A. Work with CRIISC staff to establish contact with local communities, faith based and local organizations, and individuals related to LGBTQ+ History
B. Develop contact and trust with community members for the purpose of gaining both historical insight and personal narrative.
C. Attend events and community gatherings to collect information and piece together local developments related to policy and pertinent LGBTQ+ histories and activism.
VI. Project Management
A. As needed assist in project management tasks including reports, time keeping, meeting coordination and scheduling.
B. Work with the exhibition advisory committee and exhibition committee on the concept design and implementation of the project.
VII. Meetings
A. Meet with CRIISC for monthly check-ins
B. As needed meet for specific targeted meetings on specific deliverables
C. Attend and participate in programming and events related to Out in the I.E.
DELIVERABLES
The Lead Researcher shall produce the following deliverables:
● LGBTQ+ History Annotated Bibliography
○ Delivery of comprehensive annotated bibliography of LGBTQ+ research and archival resources available in the I.E.
● Historical Research Summaries
○ Provide thorough research summaries on key LGBTQ+ history topics, topics to be determined by the Lead Researcher in consultation with the Public History Director and CRIISC staff.
● Exhibition Checklist
○ Develop a draft exhibition checklist with material culture objects (both digital and physical) listed alongside their location and metadata.
● Curation Outline
○ Produce an exhibition curation outline laying out the key subjects and topics of the exhibition and their anticipated order and flow.
● Draft Exhibition Text
○ Create draft exhibition text (10,00-15,000 words) that will be finessed into the
final exhibition text in collaboration with CRIISC staff.
● Oral History Interviews
○ Conduct oral history interviews. Number of interviews to be determined by research and emerging community connections.
● Archival Collection Items
○ Work with community connections to digitally collect archival materials in collaboration with CRIISC staff.

Performance Standards
Deliverables shall meet, at a minimum, the performance standards in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local codes, regulations, guidelines, and standards.
COMPENSATION AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE
Contract: $12,000, December 2024 – August 31, 2025
The contractor shall invoice CRIISC quarterly (based on schedule in section 07) until the award is used up or until the end of the period of performance, whichever comes first. With the invoice, the contractor will submit a timesheet listing the hours worked and a summary of services performed during the pay period.
The invoice must be presented on contractor business letterhead and include:
- Vendor name
- Vendor address
- Telephone number
- Email address
- Invoice number
- Invoice Date
- Project name
- Description of services
- Dates of service
- Payment amount
- Payment terms
- Signed W-9 form (for first payment only)
The Lead Researcher shall submit the invoice and information above to the Civil Rights Institute of Inland Southern California. Payment will be made upon completion and acceptance of work and receipt of invoice.
LOCATION AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Lead Researcher shall complete the Statement of Work at their own location with some travel taken to specific historic sites to collect work.
