Sight Unseen was the first major museum exhibition of work by some of the most accomplished blind photographers in the world.  Over the past 16 years, the exhibition has traveled to more than 20 venues nationally and internationally. Curator and photographer, Douglas McCulloh, an Inland region native, described the exhibition as a rich subject full of paradox and revelation that occupies the ground zero of photography.

In curating Sight Unseen Reframed for The Civil Rights Institute of Inland Southern California, we focused on those photographers who lived and/or worked in Southern California, 7 of the original 12 artists.

McCulloh in his curatorial statement, excerpted in part here, reflects on the approaches of these photographers:

The artists of Sight Unseen—while as divergent and individual as those found in any collection of art-makers—produce their work from three basic conceptual stances. At the risk of oversimplifying, my framework for examining the making of this work breaks down into three categories:

  • Constructing and Internal Gallery of Images

  • Non-Retinal Photography

  • Photographing to See

In the end, of course, the power of these photographs is not metaphysics or politics, but vision.

– Douglas McCulloh
